The Messenger

The Messenger
A short Rendition of Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. We had to do this for an English assignment, so I thought I’d share it since I have no other use for it. 😛

The Messenger was young and swift, for through great perils did he have to travel to deliver his precious information. This messenger had a very important task. Troop advancements, ambushes, even something like the weather could be important information for the generals and lords. Alas, the messenger’s age brought him greed, so sometimes he kept this information to himself- or told the wrong people. As long as it got him a few florins, he was happy. Even though, he was good at heart- mostly, and the people truly loved him despite his sometimes shady ways.

The Messenger wore leather tunic on his breast for speed and a hood on his head for protection from the sun. He carried a satchel on his back for the scrolls and other bits of information that he was endowed to deliver. He often had to fight with his only weapon, a dagger that was attached to his belt, and of course, the occasional fist when things got rough. Many enemies were after this man, but the messenger always seemed to get away unharmed, for he was truly a clever and sneaky person. Ah, yet the messenger is no longer with us today, as he was sent to the lands of Persia to deliver a priceless gift to the king.

Some say he is basking in the riches of this gift, others say that the Persians tricked him- those dirty fiends. We can only hope that in the horizon we see a horse galloping swiftly towards our town, with our beloved Messenger on top, bearing great news and tales of his journeys. One day, perhaps.
